Ebb and Flow: Concert for Flute and Guitar, Saturday 23 January, 6 pm, Fundacao Oriente, Dili

Australian musician Lina Andonovska completes her residency in Timor-Leste next week with a collaborative concert for flute and guitar, with Timorese musician Savio Freitas.  The duo will take the audience on a journey that crosses cultures, as they perform new arrangements of Timorese songs. Also on the program are works for solo flute by JS Bach and Australian composers Brett Dean, Lachlan Skipworth and Andrew Ford. The concert is supported by Fundacao Oriente who will host it in their lovely venue in Dili.

Both performers have come to Timor after international studies and performing, with Lina’s skill as a flute player shared in concerts across Europe and Asia in recent months. Savio has recently returned from music education studies in Japan to establish his own school in Dili. The concert will raise funds to support the establishment of Safrei, Savio’s music school.

This concert is the culmination of Lina's work in Timor as part of an Asialink Residency, supported by host organisation Many Hands International. Lina’s two month musical visit to Timor Leste explored collaboration with Timorese musicians and community. This month she continued her creative journey, using collaborative skills with traditional oi-oil (bamboo flute) player Sr Henrique in the Lautem district. Sr Henrique composed a song on the oi-oil welcoming fellow musician Lina to his community, and the two played it together on their flutes.

Lina also visited the village of Kakavei, where she led a follow-up music workshop with local children on recorder, harmonica and voice. Friends of Lospalos group from Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia donated additional harmonicas and recorder instruments for students to use during this visit.
